About
Mary Bernadine McCoy is the sewist and designer behind Bernadine Handmade. She first learned to sew in her high school home economics class in the early 2000s and has been sewing ever since. Formally trained in Communication Design at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Mary’s professional and creative practice spans graphic design, type design, music production and more recently, pattern making.
Inspired by other creatives in her life, Mary incorporates functionality and thoughtful details into her sewing patterns for everyday objects. Her patterns undergo multiple prototypes, and her instructions and tutorials are carefully written, illustrated, photographed and filmed.
She hopes that her patterns inspire others to take up the craft of sewing through practical projects that build confidence and skill.
Mary currently lives and works on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, known today as Vancouver.
